Elizabeth Olsen Explains Why Wanda Doesn’t Have Sokovian Accent In The Series WandaVision

As expected, the success of “Wandavision” has been instantaneous. This happens mainly due to two reasons. The first one observes how this audio-visual product is very special both in the context of the MCU, and in the current television panorama external to Marvel production. The second one, instead, resides in the excellent entertainment, rich in visual solutions and never tiring or end in itself. Many fans during the first two episodes have noticed a detail that could be insignificant to many: the accent of Scarlet Witch that is completely American.

We have been told from the Marvel universe that Wanda is from Sokovia, a country is a fake Slavic nation. Indeed, the accent that Wanda should have got should have been close to that of Slovakia, but it did not. To this fan dilemma, the answer came from Elizabeth Olsen herself, Wanda’s interpreter.

Why Not Have Sokovian Accent

“The Sokovia accent was created by me and Aaron and our dialect coach because it’s a fake country and we could find different sources of Slavic sounds. And we wanted to make sure it didn’t sound Russian because Black Widow speaks Russian. So we just needed to sound more like Slovakian. Therefore, we created these sound changes that worked for Aaron’s British accent going to Slovakia basically and my American accent so that we sounded related. And then all of a sudden, all these different characters had to speak it in different films. [Laughs] So the Sokovian accent took a lot of time. It hasn’t gone anywhere. There have been reasons for everything. It lightened up when she started living in the States, and in WandaVision she is playing the role of being in an American sitcom and so it’s not gone. It is absolutely still there.”

Directors Joe and Anthony Russo, authors of “Captain America: Civil War” and the two recent chapters of the Avengers’ adventures, had already stated that the “disappearance” of the Scarlet Witch accent was a deliberate detail and related to the fact that characters like Black Widow are trained to perform jobs as spies, thus having to go unnoticed within different communities.

Marvel fans may then hear Elizabeth Olsen using the accent of her years in Sokovia in one of the episodes. This detail of the accent is indicative of how the TV show immediately became the subject of truly remarkable attention. Have you already formulated theories and predictions about the future of the series? We cannot wait to see the next episodes of “Wandavision”, of course only on Disney+.  We remind you that now the schedule is weekly: the next episodes will be released every Friday.
