Green Arrow And The Canaries: Is The Spinoff Not Happening?

The Marvel industry has today a very concrete television project. All its coming out series, as “Wandavision”, can prove it, but not always has been so strong and determined in the television scene. Except for some proposals such as “Daredevil” and “Jessica Jones”. The Marvel studios were not so far from DC standards in terms of quantity. Indeed, we can say that the situation was absolutely in favour of Batman’s house. One of the flagship series of the DC television project was “Arrow”, which began in 2012 and finished in 2020.

Green Arrow and the Canaries

Green Arrow and The Canaries’ Future Is Uncertain?

On Tuesday, September 24th, Variety magazine published a great scoop. The CW was developing a spin-off series of Arrow focus on the Canaries, a trio of vigilantes compose of Laurel Lance, Dinah Drake, and Mia Smoak. The title of the new series would have been “Green Arrow and the Canaries”. After it was announced the Arrow spin-off in a feminine tone. After that, it would continue to give life to other Arrowverse characters, The CW decided to cancel the new series.

Played by Katie Cassidy Rodgers (Laurel Lance), Juliana Harkavy (Dinah Drake), and Katherine Mcnamara (Mia Smoak), the Canaries are three heroines. They act in the future version of Star City introduced in the 7th season with the episode “Star City 2040” (7.16). 2040 is presumably the year in which the new Arrow series will be set. To wear the green mantle of Green Arrow is Mia Smoak, the daughter of Oliver and Felicity Smoak. She debuted in the series during the previous season. And she is one of the main characters of the 8th and the last one.

“Green Arrow & The Canaries” initially confirmed the trio of the leading actresses: Katie Cassidy Rodgers, Juliana Harkavy, and Katherine Mcnamara in the project. This same project did launch during the 8th season of “Arrow” in the form of a special introduction that serves as a backdoor pilot for the new series. The episode “Green Arrow & the Canaries”, the ninth of season 8, aired on January 21st, 2020 on The CW in the United States. The news that the spin-off will not take place leaked on Friday, January 8th, 2021, almost a year after the airing of the backdoor pilot.

Bottom Line

The names that worked on the project were Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, Beth Schwartz, Marc Guggenheim, Jill Blankenship, and Oscar Balderrama. They acted as executive producers, and with Schwartz, Guggenheim, Blankenship, and Balderrama as writers of the pilot episode. Berlanti Productions worked on the pilot in coordination with Warner Bros Television. This news unfortunately does not bode very well for the expansive universe of DC on television. On the other hand, the editorial line taken by the Marvel project of expansion seems to be the winning one. We will know it better when the Wandavision premiere will come out on January 15th. This new television project promises to be really interesting in various aspects and it is now very close.
