Who Killed Sara: Is the Show Based on Real-Life Story of Someone?

The most famous TV series Who Killed Sara? Jose Valenzuela got inspiration from some of his real-life experiences for the mystery series. The Netflix series premiered on the streaming platform back in March 2021. Who Killed Sara? is currently the most-watched series (with foreign-language) around the world. It has another record of being on top in more than 60 countries on Netflix. So, the show has something in it.

What is the Show’s Main Theme?

The show mainly seems to be a combination of murder mysteries and telenovela dramas. In both cases, every character looks to be the suspect, and nothing is as we see. Valenzuela has vast experience of almost 30 years in Screenwriting as well as Novel Writing. Chile-born Valenzuela has worked on several films and TV projects in many different parts of the world. Let’s look at how he got inspiration from his real-life experiences to make the series an exceptional one.

Valenzuela has come from a family of authors, which has inspired him greatly in his writing career. In one of his interviews with AND Radio, he discussed his family’s role in developing as a writer. He also revealed one of the pieces of advice given to him by his aunt, the author of a famous children’s book named Ana Maria Guiraldes. He said:

Provide the main characters with your past and all your conditions. The situation won’t go out of your hands because you’re now writing about a person you know.

And it’s evident that one of the significant strengths of Who Killed Sara? is its multi-dimensional characters and the complex.

Valenzuela was himself a book lover from his childhood. He got the inspiration for this series from those authors as well. Moreover, his screenwriting roams around family dramas which can also be observed in Who Killed Sara? As a child, he used to study the Sherlock Holmes stories by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. He fell in love with classic murder mysteries written by Agatha Christie as well. And it’s evident from the beginning of season 1 as well where he added a quotation from Christie’s book:

Very few of us are what we seem.”

The quote has something to do with the series because the mysteries, duality, and identities are the basis of it.

Valenzuela has also expressed his personal opinion as a gay man in Who Killed Sara?. He has discussed all the inequalities he had to face because of his sexual orientation. The show has also highlighted the issues associated with homophobia and violence against the LGBTQ+ community in Mexico. Reuters has recently claimed that 2020 was the worst and deadliest year for the same neighborhood in Mexico. Chema Lazcano is one of the gay characters from the series, which represented the entire community. He tells his father about being gay, for which his father starts assaulting him. So, Valenzuela has shown enough courage to express multiple things in a single series which is undoubtedly an achievement.
