McKay’s film “Don’t Look Up.” This social satire’s exciting and tense plot revolves around a rushing comet that is expected to hit Earth in six months, marking the end of life and embarking on a mission of prevention. This peace has successfully brought together many famous names from the film and music industry and soon after the relies successfully placed in the top 10 on Netflix.
Although at first, you might think that we have been served just one more in a series of disaster films, however, this is not the case. “Don’t Look Up” is a light-hearted yet accurate social commentary of the questionable priorities and agendas of our society.
What is Don’t Look Up about?
At the beginning of the film “Don’t look up,” astronomers Kate Dibiasky, played by Jennifer Lawrence, and Randall Mindy, played by Leonardo DiCaprio, notice that an extremely dangerous comet is moving towards the Earth. According to their calculations, the comet will hit the Earth in a little over half a year, destroying life as we know it. Aware of the consequences of their findings, Dibiasky and Mindy ought to take urgent action to prevent the disaster from happening.
These astronomers met with skepticism and indifference even from the media and the current US president, played in the film by three-time Oscar winner Meryl Streep. But despite all the efforts and public appearances, no one takes them seriously, even though they have scientifically proven facts. They have become a general object of ridicule and meme motives to make matters worse.
As the end draws closer and the comet becomes more visible, some things change. However, the change came too late.

Why is Don’t Look Up liked?
Editing and casting are to everyone’s praise. Several great actors and music stars are present in this film. The characters are pretty humorous, and the events seamlessly follow into a coherent story that quickly made it to the top 10 on Netflix. However, while the exciting plot and sounding names may entice you to watch the film, be sure not to expect a relaxing comedy.
In its essence, the “Don’t Look Up” is a layered story of lies, oppression, explosion, and deceit in the modern-day world.
“Don’t Look Up” is a satire that uses the metaphor of disaster for the general indifference in society towards solving global climate problems. In addition, it reminds vent of the current dysfunctional state of politics and the media. While the politicians care more about how something will impact their polling numbers than saving the planet, the media cares more about finding something scandal-related than alerting people about impending destruction.
It does sound familiar.
“Don’t Look Up” focuses on the loss of focus regarding the real existential issues that threaten us daily. Even the film’s title is an excellent synonym for our society’s nature to turn our heads the other way, that is, to ignore an obvious problem.
Why is “Don’t Look Up” disliked?
Critics, audiences, and activists have both judged and praised this film. One of the main points of the criticism for this top 10 on Netflix film is its humor that sometimes seems to be falling flat. The ongoing mixture of comic cynicism, witty one-liners, and a lot of trying too hard to be funny does not seem to do its justice to the all-star cast.
“Don’t Look Up” tried so tirelessly and relentlessly to scold society for being ignorant. It is not sublet at its attempts to make people listen and wake them up when it comes to the issues of today’s society. However, in its satiric attempts at mockery,” Don’t Look Up” unintentionally trivializes the problems it seeks to highlight.
Is “Don’t Look Up” worth watching?
In addition to the fantastic cast featuring Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Lawrence, Rob Morgan, Meryl Streep, Cate Blanchett, Jonah Hill, Himesh Patel, Timothée Chalamet, Ariana Grande, Kid Cudi, Matthew Perry, and Tomer Sisley. There is also a story that leaves us questioning our reality and shows us that we need to reexamine our values!
While the film seems to fail short at some of its ambitious social commentary attempts, it gets its message out loud and clears. So, if you are looking for a light-hearted satire with an important message, this is a film for you!
